The Green Star Hotel Initiative, enacted in 2007, is a joint project by the Deutche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and major players in Egypt’s tourism and hotel industry. The aim of the initiative is to enact comprehensive and sustainable changes to hotels and resorts that will improve environmental performance and sensitivity. The program, applied with great success in its first testing ground El Gouna, is being expanded to include destinations such as Taba Heights, Madinat Makadi and Madinat Coraya. This manual acts as a guide to the vision and direction of the initiative while also providing details on practical ways hotels can reduce their carbon footprint.
